A two for one kind of lesson!!!

Making Inferences and Compound Words

This week we have been working on making inferences.
We know that good readers use what they already know
AND evidence from the text to make inferences as they read.

We worked with partners today.
To find our partners...we used compound words.
My friend, Mrs. Selm, gave me some compound word cards cut in half.
I passed out the cards and the students had to silently find their "other half".

Then they looked at pictures of kids and had to make
inferences about the kids.  They used what they already know
AND evidence from the pictures to infer.

It was a JOY to overhear things like,
"I infer that they are friends because they are smiling and helping each other."
"I infer that she is at school because she is sitting in a desk and has school supplies."

Here are just a few of our "compound word" partners!!!
