Our New Class Pets

They are not furry.
They are not cuddly.
Some may not think they are cute.
Most are excited to meet our new class pets...

WORMS!!!

We created compost bins and we will observe how the soil changes over time.
The "thumbs down kids" were not interested in touching our new pets!

Book Club Discussions

We have been reading about needs and wants this week.
Here are some pictures of the first graders
reading their book club books with a partner.
They had to list some new facts they learned
and a question they still had after reading their books.

I just love listening in on their conversations about their books!
So insightful for their ages!!

Redwood Trees - A Retelling with Sock Puppets

We have been playing with technology in the classroom.  Our PTO was kind enough to gift our class our very own I-Pad!!!  We have researched some fun apps and will play a bit with the best ways to use them in the classroom.

This morning I found some quiet, hard working students to help me.  We used the Sock Puppet app to make a retelling of the book Michael Fey and the Giant Redwoods.

I am playing the part of the dog-type character.  My students are playing the part of the zebra!
Thank you to (in order of appearance) Will, Lexi, Elise and Jacob S. for their retelling!

And....in case you can't understand those cute little voices, here is the transcript:
Will:  Redwood Trees are special because they are one of the biggest things on earth.
Lexi:  Redwood trees can grow up to 300 feet.
Elise:  Redwood trees grow in California.
Jacob S.:  They need wet warm weather.

More to come!!!

Pumpkins...and Reading....and V.I.P.s...OH MY!

We had a super fun day today!
We read the story Pumpkin, Pumpkin.
We worked on writing the sequence of how a pumpkin grows,
using the words first, next, then and last.
Some students were ready to share their stories with the microphone!
We even made super cute pumpkins and hung them in the hallway!

We had our FUN READING FRIDAY!

A change of scenery makes reading extra fun!
